Library Crafts: DIY Nature-Inspired Wind Chimes

Who'd have thought DIY Nature-Inspired Wind Chimes would belong to libraries? These crafts are perfect for keeping young users occupied, although this would work best if the library is near a garden or has a garden. This makerspace idea is great for library marketing and attracting users.

Materials:

  • Twigs or small branches
  • String, yarn, or twine
  • Natural beads, shells, and wooden discs
  • Scissors
  • Hole punch (for wooden discs)
  • Paint and brushes
  • Feathers, leaves, and other natural elements
  • Metal bells or chime tubes (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Base: Gather twigs or small branches that will serve as the top of the wind chime. Kids can paint or decorate them with markers if desired.
  2. Create Hanging Elements: Kids can cut lengths of string or twine to create hanging strands. They can thread natural beads, shells, and wooden discs onto the strings. For wooden discs, a hole punch can be used to make holes.
  3. Add Natural Elements: Incorporate feathers, leaves, and other natural elements into the hanging strands. Kids can tie or glue these items onto the strings.
  4. Assemble the Wind Chime: Tie each strand of decorated string to the twig or branch. Space them evenly across the branch.
  5. Optional Chimes: For an added musical element, attach small metal bells or chime tubes to some of the strings.
  6. Final Touches: Adjust the lengths of the strings as needed, and make sure everything is securely attached. Kids can hang their wind chimes in a breezy spot at home.
Alternatively, here is a crafting idea that can take the place of wind chimes if your library is located in a more urban area with few nature items lying around: wind spinner 3D paper roses!

Best Practices for Library Collaborations and Partnerships with Other Organizations

Library collaborations and partnerships can work if we consider several factors, many of which have a lot to do with the cultural and economic climate of the region where your library is located.  Similar Perspectives  Unless all organizations in the collaboration agree that “a community can help raise a child reader,” the entire project will be in jeopardy.  We should never forget that there are people that do not believe libraries are still relevant, and if the organization the library is partnering with secretly or outrightly believe so, then the project is doomed from the start.   Examples of Library Collaborations  Some partnership projects your library can join are the following:   a book drive for disaster areas  workshops for slow readers (children/adults)  a recurring storybook reading session  Challenges of Library Collaborations One can dream that all library partnerships will be smooth-sailing, but experi...
